Help Save Paw Paw’s Historic B&O Railroad Station!
Nestled along the scenic Potomac River, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station in Paw Paw, West Virginia, is more than just a building — it’s a living piece of history. Built in 1882 by the famed B&O architect E. Francis Baldwin, this “medium brick” depot once bustled with travelers, freight, and the pulse of a growing town. Today, it stands as one of the few surviving 19th-century B&O stations, remarkably intact with its original brickwork, roof structure, and design — even if modern shingles now cover its historic roof.
The station is a testament to Paw Paw’s rich heritage: the orchards, tanneries, sawmills, and hardworking families that defined the town. Yet, years of neglect and exposure have left it in danger. Without immediate action, this irreplaceable landmark could be lost forever.
That’s where the Allegany Preservation Society Limited, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit, steps in. Their mission is clear: acquire the depot, stabilize and restore it, and return it to the community as a museum, educational center, and gathering place. This is about more than preserving bricks and mortar — it’s about keeping Paw Paw’s story alive.
A town without its railroad station is a town missing a piece of its soul.
The station is where neighbors met, stories were shared, and generations connected. Children pressed their faces to the windows to watch trains rush by; families waved goodbye to loved ones and welcomed them home. Losing the station is losing a witness to the rhythms of life that shaped the town.
The Allegany Preservation Society has submitted an offer to CSX to purchase the depot, but they need the community’s support to make the restoration a reality. So far, over $1,500 has been raised toward the $10,000 goal — a promising start, but there’s still work to do.
Every donation, large or small, helps:
- Acquire and stabilize the station
- Preserve its historic architecture
- Transform it into a vibrant community space
By giving today, you become part of Paw Paw’s living history. Together, we can ensure that this unique B&O depot continues to educate, inspire, and serve as a symbol of pride for generations to come.
